There are several cement boats sunk in the shallows as a breakwater for the swimming beach at the Kiptopeke State Park on the Chesapeake Bay near the south end of the eastern shore peninsula. A naval aviator told me that during the second World War, cement boats were an experiment in using non strategic material for commercial purposes. These coastal vessels replaced metal barges and coasters successfully, although they were unwieldy and inflexible and did not survive past the war as successful commercial vehicles. The breakwater is an aerial landmark for military aviators.
