Broken shale in clay from the Maryland mountains

Broken shale in clay from the Maryland mountains
Another photo from a hike in Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland. Here a tree had recently been uprooted and fallen over. The roots had pulled up large amounts of the clay earth with much broken shale, and subsequent rains had washed away much of the soil, leaving broken shale pieces. The Maryland mountains have large extents of shale and specific environments created by the exposure and decay of the shale. Here it forms a random pattern against the dirt.
