This was one of a numerous flock of night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) which had taken over a vacant bird enclosure at the National Zoo in Washington DC. The enclosure is one of the ones for flightless birds but the night herons seemed very happy with it.
Rather large birds, black crowned night herons fish in the evening and night. They have two long white plumes coming from their heads and proceeding onto their backs.
Shot with a Nikon D80 and a 135mm AIS lens.
