A dragonfly (slaty skimmer, Libellula incesta) perched on the seed head of a marsh plant, next to a creek in northwest Florida. This female slaty skimmer dragonfly, seen close up, has larger, darker wing patterns than the male of the species. Slaty skimmoers are common dragonflies in eastern North America and mature between June and August.
