George Washington’s Potowmac Canal at Great Falls

George Washingtons Potowmac Canal at Great Falls

The Potomac Company among whose owners was George Washington built 5 skirting canals around the major falls of the Potomac River to improve navigability in the late 1700s and early 1800s. This portion of the canal at Great Falls can be seen above ground. Other portions of the Canal (near Violettes Lock) are visible at water level. That one is an active kayak course.
