The southwestern face of the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City showing one of the heroic figures. I do not know which virtue this one represents. Fun art deco sculpture in a heroic – almost socialist realism style. Was Kansas City ever really that far left?

A sphinx at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. Two identical or nearly identical sphinxes flank the obelisk at the World War 1 monument. Unlike most sphinxes, these Kansas City sphinxes hide their faces. It made me wonder, are they ashamed of the losses – heretofore unprecedented? The hidden face sphinxes were more emotionally riveting than the classically sculpted heroic figures on the memorial. I also appreciated the art deco style of the whole construction.

There are 4 figures atop the 271 foot Liberty Memorial in Kansas City – symbolically they are Courage, Honor, Patriotism and Sacrifice. I have pictures of all of them but am not sure which is which. I do know that this is the one facing southeast. The Liberty Memorial is known locally as the penis of the plains. The limestone, travertine, marble and granite memorial is built in remembrance of the war dead of the Great War.

The Liberty Memorial, located in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, is a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War I and houses the The National World War I Museum, as designated by the United States Congress in 2004. Parts of the Kansas City skyline can be seen in the background. At night, the top of the memorial tower emits steam illuminated by bright orange lights. This effect creates the illusion of a burning pyre and can be seen for some distance. The memorial is built on a prominence now known as Memorial Hill.

The Western Auto Building, also known as the Coca-Cola Building or the Candler Building, is located at 2107 Grand Boulevard, in the Crossroads neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. The twelve-story Commercial-style building was designed by Arthur C. Tufts & Co. and built for Coca-Cola in 1914. It later was the headquarters of the Western Auto Supply Co., whose multistory lighted sign still tops the building. This visibility, together with the structure’s longevity, has made the Western Auto Building a Kansas City landmark. The Western Auto Building and two surrounding buildings were converted into loft condominiums in 2004. the 12-story curved tower houses 93 units ranging in size from 635 to 1,470 square feet. The units initially sold in a range between $109,900 and $311,900.

I did not have the best light when I shot the Western Auto Building with a Nikon D80 and and 18-55mm digital lens in December 2011.
